Novomatic's Book Of Ra Slots |
The Book Of Ra slot from Novomatic (sometimes licenced in Europe as Book Of Liberia)
is a very popular land-based casino game, particularly in the UK and Europe (I've played it in Budapest in
Hungary and in Prague, Cz). Actually, there are 2 Book Of Ra slots: the original 9-line Book Of Ra (now dubbed
"Book Of Ra Classic" at some casinos) and the Book Of Ra Deluxe
("Book Of Ra 2") version with 10-lines. Both games have now been made available to play online as part of the
Novomatic Gaminator slots portfolio that also includes
the Katana slot, Columbus, Lord Of The Ocean and
the excellent Lucky Ladys Charm (which has a very decent 97.01% RTP!).
The original "Classic" 9-line version of Book Of Ra has pretty much been superceded by the Deluxe version - often referred to
as 'Book Of Ra 2' but that's not a bad thing IMO and playing online, the Deluxe versions of Novomatic games are more
aesthetically pleasing.
What makes the Book Of Ra slot a bit of a cult game is the free spins bonus which has a unique twist. When you get
3 Book Of Ra scatters anywhere in view, you get 10 free spins, however as part of the feature, one of the symbols
becomes what is dubbed an "expanding symbol". What this means is that whenever the selected symbol appears on a reel,
the whole reel becomes that symbol and they add wins like scatter symbols. They don't even need to be on adjacent
reels - anywhere in view will do. To get an idea, check out the video I have made below where the "Q" symbol was
selected to be the expander.
The real big wins come on Book Of Ra slots when you get the free spins and the symbol selected is either the
"Indiana Jones" like chappie or the Pharaoh. But mainly the bloke. Recently I sat down to play Book Of Ra at the
Empire Casino
(Leicester Square, London) and got the Indiana Jones character expanding in the free spins. The free spins retrigerred
twice more for 30 free spins in total and on one of those spins I got 4 Indiana Jones's in view for a win of £1,500 -
from a £1.50 bet!
Incidentally, fans of the Book Of Ra slot will also appreciate Novomatic's Lord Of The Ocean slot
which has a very similar bonus feature with expanding symbols. The gameplay resembles Book Of Ra but the way the
free spins are "revealed" rather than "spun" is more reminiscent of the aforementioned Lucky Lady's Charm or
the very volatile Fairy Queen slot. UK players might also recognise the Reel King slot
which is also online and has more of a "fruit machine" feel about it.
Novomatic appear to have set the RTP (the theoretical long-term payout percentage) for the online version of
both the "Classic" Book Of Ra slot and the "Book Of Ra Deluxe" version to 94.26% but this is
no doubt subject to change without notice! I've checked it with 3 seperate online casinos (Sky, Mybet and Grosvenor)
and they all give the same setting. I suspect the other casinos with Book Of Ra are identical although there
is no published proof.

There are only a handful of online casinos that have Book Of Ra slots at the moment and of those, the only safe casinos
I am aware of are listed bove. But if it helps, I have played at all of these casinos myself and can vouch for them first hand.
It's also worth noting that a few country restrictions are in place but hopefully that won't affect too many of you.

Just to round things off, I thought I'd post a nice screenshot of 5 Pharaoh symbols I hit
in February 2012 at Grosvenor Casino. Was
a good session overall actually - just before this I hit the feature for 60x my bet, then got this
followed by another 50x feature shortly after. I made a bit more on Dolphin's Pearl before
coming back and losing about $400 on Book Of Ra again but decided to do a runner with about $1,500 from a
$250 deposit :)
The weird thing was, I recently played Book Of Ra Deluxe on the Gaminators down at Rendezvous Casino in Brighton
and was just about to leave (well down!) when I hit...5 Pharaohs! I have posted some more of
my wins on Novomatic slots if you fancy seeing taking a look including
5 Indiana Jones characters on the Ra slot!
Anyway, just a word of warning: this win is waaaay off recouping the losses I have had on Book Of Ra overall
- it's a tough cookie so play it with care LOL.
