Book Of Ra Slot |
The Book Of Ra slot from Novomatic, sometimes also licenced in Europe as Book Of Liberia,
is a popular land-based casino game particularly in Europe (I've played it in Budapest in
Hungary and in Prague). Actually, there are 2 Book Of Ra slots: the original 9-line version
and the 10-payline Book Of Ra Deluxe Slot sometimes referred to as "Book Of Ra 2" but
you rarely the Classic version online now.
By way of background (for those interested) and as you may already know, Ra was the Ancient Egyptian sun God,
not that you're particularly interested in this when spinning the reels of a slot game obviously but for some reason that I
have never quite fathomed, Egypt and the mysticism surrounding the Pharaohs seem to be a winning formula for slot games.
What makes the Book Of Ra slot a bit of a cult game is the free spin bonus which has a unique twist. When you get
3 or more Wild symbols anywhere in view, they trigger 10 free spins and one of the symbols
becomes what Novomatic dub an "expanding scatter". What this means is that whenever the selected symbol appears on a reel,
the whole reel becomes that symbol and they add wins like scatter symbols. They don't even need to be on adjacent
reels - anywhere in view will do. To get an idea, check out the video I have made below where the "Q" symbol was
selected to be the expanding symbol.
The real big wins arrive when you get the free spins and the symbol selected to expand
is either the "Indiana Jones" tomb explorer symbol or the Pharaoh. The best win I had on the game was at
London's Empire Casino
(in the newly revamped Leicester Square) when I got the Indiana Jones explorer character expanding in the free spins.
The free spins retrigerred twice more for 30 free spins in total and on one of those spins, I got 4 more expanding Indianas
in view for a win of £1,500, all from a £1.50 bet!
Incidentally, fans of both Book Of Ra slots will probably also appreciate Lord Of The Ocean
which has a very similar feature with expanding symbols. The game-play resembles Book Of Ra but the way the
free spins are "revealed" rather than "spun" is more reminiscent of the aforementioned
Lucky Lady's Charm or the (very!) volatile Fairy Queen.
Novomatic appear to have set the RTP (the theoretical long-term payout percentage) for the online version of
both Ra slots (Classic and Deluxe) to 94.26% but this is no doubt subject to change without notice!
You'll actually find that most of the Novomatic slots now online have
their RTP setting published in the paytable at some (but not all!) casinos.

Some Decent Wins On Book Of Ra & Other Novomatic Games |
I have posted some pictures of big wins on Novomatic slots if you fancy taking a look including
5 Indiana Jones characters on Book Of Ra and a larger version of the 5 Pharaohs hit shown at the top of this page, which
I hit back in February 2012 playing online at Grosvenor Casinos.
It was part of a good session actually - just before this I hit the feature for 60x my bet, then got this hit
followed by another 50x Bet feature shortly after. I made a bit more playing Dolphin's Pearl before
coming back and losing about $400 on Book Of Ra again but decided to do a runner with about $1,500 from a
$250 deposit :)
Just a quick word of warning though: these wins only scrape the surface of the losses I have had on this game overall
- Book Of Ra and the other Novomatic games are far tougher nuts to crack than more forgiving slot games such as
other Egyptian-themed games, IGT's Cleopatra or Pharaoh's Fortune and trust me here, you will
lose far more than you win over the long term so please excercise care if you decide to play it online for real money!
